Lentil

I’m a foster dog. I lived in Woodlandia under the care of Ana for a couple of months. I loved it. We had dinners together. They took me for walks in all sorts of weird places. Eventually they found me a home.

“What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.”
-Kurt Vonnegut

Hello! My name is Karen Van Arsdale and I’m a francophile, dessert connoisseur, and dog lover. I’m finishing up my undergrad degrees in French, International Studies, and Linguistics and in the fall I’ll be starting an MA in French Linguistics here at IU. I love to travel the world, eat exotic food, learn languages, lay in the sun, teach others, go to potlucks, get hugs, couch surf, keep sketchbooks, ride unicorns, live passionately, and dream deeply. I was originally attracted to the coop for the tasty food and ideal location, but what I have discovered is a truly unique and wonderful community of people endeavoring to build something together. It has truly changed my life.

Meg H.

Hey everyone! My name’s Meg. I enjoy small things like laughing, reading, biking, sunshine, taking cool pictures, bright colors, inspiring quotes, music and good, healthy food. I also enjoy big things like traveling, helping others and spending time with family and friends. My favorite part about the Coop is that it combines all of these things. Hopefully I’ll see you around!

Sean M.

Hello! My name is Sean. I really enjoy baking food, especially insane varieties of cookies like banana-apple-maple-agave-peanutbutter-chocochip. I also enjoy playing my saxophone and listening to jazz as I read.

(or Viva-I-Poll-Ova)

Last year I was not open to living with anyone much less with 4 people, or looking ahead, with 18 people. A summer in Romania with 13 others in a small house, followed by a month long trip living in a car with two people quickly changed my mind. Going back to my two bedroom house with a basement that I had to myself seemed bland and lonely, and I started the search for a roommate or two for my move to Bloomington. I had an old friend who was living in the co-op and after one visit, I knew that I wanted to be part of this community.

I study social patterns, specifically how individual differences run as patterns among society and cause quirks as well as offer explanations for some of life’s mysteries. IU is what brought me to this town, and I believe that I still learn more about this place every day. I am convinced that life is what you make it and I make a point to seek experiences that take me off the beaten path. I hope that in this lifetime I find many opportunities to impact others with positive long lasting effects and contribute to a world that has more to offer the future generations than when I entered it.

Andrea R.

My name is Andrea Rae and I live in the lovely Woodlawn House. I am currently an senior undergraduate student at Indiana University studying human biology and management. I love outdoor activities, swimming, biking, history, and poetry. Next year I will be headed to medical school and I look forward to combining my interests in food, health, and medicine. This is my first year living in a co-op and I think it one of the greatest experiences of my time in college.

John K.

I’m currently studying library science and Latin America. I joined the co-op because I love all things gezellig. Every few months, I dash off to New York to visit a very special someone. I like to travel, but I also like staying home. Sometimes I wonder how I end up where I do. For example, the time a Mexican clown juggled machetes over my face.

Chris H.

Hey. I’m Chris, a.k.a. “Opher,” “Harry,” “Marmalade” ; ) I’m a researcher (postdoc), musician, and left left liberal. Originally from Miami (FL). I’ve been living in the co-op (Helms Deep) for the past 6 months; originally as a kind of personal experiment, with relatively few expectations. Life in the co-op has been full of challenges, surprises and lots of unforeseen benefits! For example, the idea of cooking for 12 others, or for potlucks—with even larger numbers—initially terrified me. In the co-op I’ve had the opportunity to cook with several more experienced chefs, and now I genuinely love cooking for large numbers (the larger, the better!) It has also been great seeing what wonderful things can come from building community—when people pool their minds, efforts and resources!

Charis H.

I’m Charis, and I live in Bag End, the awesome little house on the West Side. Things I like include fermentation, Zimbabwean music and fiddle tunes, raw food, and my cat who everyone hates but me. I’m especially stuck on a big new project, though, which you might call Occupy Bloomington but I like to refer to as The Revolution, and I haven’t figured out yet how to balance it with every other thing in my life. I also am a newcomer to really, really liking hugs. I like building communities, dialoguing with people, and fighting for new ways of life.

Ana L.

I am a very distracted young woman that wants to do too many things at once. I believe this is the main characteristic of my personality that my friends complain about, but most of them still love me :) - I hope. I am interested in understanding humans and their choices, and also how we can live better in this world together, even with so many different crazy creatures around. I moved to the coop in August 2011 and I love it. It is great to be surrounded by people that care for something in a very intense way, and people that are willing to take you with them into their adventures. At the same time you find partners for your own endeavors, it does not matter what… You could be into growing your own food, writing and performing songs, or hanging hammocks around the house. I am from Brazil and I am currently studying Anthropology in Bloomington.

Pterodactyl Wizard

i’m the mascot of woodlandia. i love jumping and eating granola.

Tamara D.

oh hey…. I am a graduate student in sociology but really I am just trying to stay a student as long as I can and sociology was generous enough to accept me (I might also be interested in immigration policies). I love music, the color yellow, biking, cities, meals, and people. Thankfully the coop gives me tons of people to play, talk, laugh, and eat with. I especially like when I get to cook with my fellow co-opers and when we invent songs about unicorns and narwhals. I want to live many places, but stay with my friends.

Kelsey S.

I’ve been a member of the co-op since November of 2011, have been living in Helm’s Deep since May 2011 and will be moving into the new Woodlawn house in August. I aspire to make art, think creatively, be natural, live unencumbered, read good books, share stories, camp primitively, speak spanish, drink good coffee, build a bike, be inspired, speak with confidence and live passionately.
